A .PNS file is primarily a proprietary surveillance video format created by Panasonic network cameras, DVRs, and NVRs. It stores raw security footage captured by closed-circuit systems. Less commonly, the .PNS extension is used for a PNG Stereo Image, which stores two side-by-side PNG images to create a 3D stereoscopic effect, or as a proprietary video file by Pelco CCTV systems.
The Panasonic CCTV format is highly restricted. It is engineered this way to prevent tampering and ensure a strict chain of custody for legal evidence. You cannot play a .PNS video file in standard media players like VLC or web browsers. They require the original Panasonic viewer software to open. This creates massive friction for users who need to share footage with law enforcement, insurance companies, or lawyers, as the files are completely unreadable on a standard PC without the bundled executable player.
Users typically need to convert .PNS to standard video formats like MP4 or AVI to view the footage on mobile phones or regular media players. For the stereo image variant, converting to a standard PNG or JPG is necessary for standard 2D viewing.
