How to convert your PNS file

About PNS files

The .PNS extension primarily serves two distinct, incompatible purposes: a proprietary surveillance video recording generated by Panasonic Network Cameras/Recorders (and legacy Pelco systems), or a PNG Stereo Image used for 3D visualizations.

1. Panasonic/Pelco Surveillance Video:
These files are raw, uncompressed, or strictly encoded video streams saved directly from network video recorders (NVRs).

• The Problem: They are designed for security integrity, not compatibility. You cannot open them in standard players like VLC Media Player or Windows Media Player. They often require the specific proprietary viewer (e.g., DX8100 Export Viewer) or the original NVR hardware to playback.
• The Solution: For legal or archiving purposes, these must be converted to MP4 or AVI. Since direct converters are rare due to the proprietary codec, the most reliable workflow is often using the manufacturer's export tool to "re-export" as AVI, or using a screen recorder while playing the footage in its native viewer.

2. PNG Stereo Image:
Popularized by NVIDIA 3D Vision, this format contains two PNG images side-by-side (left and right eye) to create a stereoscopic 3D effect.

• The Problem: Standard image viewers see this as a single wide image or fail to open it entirely. You cannot easily upload them to social media or view them on mobile devices without 3D hardware.
• The Solution: Convert these to standard JPG or PNG for 2D viewing, or to JPS (JPEG Stereo) for wider 3D compatibility. For standard viewing, you simply split the image or keep just one "eye" view.
