About PNP files

A .pnp file is primarily associated with SharePoint Provisioning Templates, a format used by developers to package site structures, lists, and branding for deployment via the Microsoft 365 PnP (Patterns and Practices) engine. While powerful for automation, these files are essentially OpenXML archives (similar to DOCX or ZIP), meaning they are not designed to be opened directly by a standard text editor or web browser. Users often struggle when they need to inspect the XML templates or assets inside without setting up complex command-line tools like PnP PowerShell. A practical workaround for inspection is to simply rename the file extension from .pnp to zip and extract it, or convert the contents to standard XML or JSON for documentation.

Secondary uses include PCB Pick and Place files generated by EDA software like Altium Designer or P-CAD. These contain X/Y coordinate data for manufacturing machines. Engineers often need to convert these into human-readable CSV or XLSX spreadsheets to verify component placement manually. Less commonly, a .pnp file may be a proprietary electronic form created by Formatta (now part of Tungsten Automation). For these legacy forms, the only viable conversion target for archiving is PDF or TIFF.

Convert.Guru analyzes your PNP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted PNG, JPG, JPEG, EXE, TEMPLATE, XLTX and DESD files.

The PNP Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PNP converter.
