About PMV files

The .pmv extension creates significant confusion because it serves three completely unrelated user groups.

  1. Brother Embroidery Users: For many, a .pmv file is a Decorative Stitch Pattern created on Brother sewing machines (like the P-Touch or Innov-is series). Unlike standard PES files, .pmv data is often proprietary to the machine's "My Custom Stitch" feature. Users typically need to convert these into widely supported formats like PES, DST, or EXP to use them in software like Embird or InkStitch, but direct conversion is difficult without the original PE-Design software.
  2. Gamers: For BattleForge (and the fan-revived Skylords Reborn) players, a .pmv file is a Game Replay. These are not video files (like MP4 or AVI). They contain raw coordinate and command data that the game engine reconstructs in real-time. You cannot play these in VLC Media Player. To share these as videos, you must play the replay inside the game client and use screen recording software like OBS Studio.
  3. Office Workers: A .pmv file may also be a PlanMaker Template from SoftMaker Office. These function like XLTX files in Excel. To edit them in Microsoft Excel, you must first open them in PlanMaker and export as XLSX.
