About PJS files

The .PJS extension represents a collision of three distinct file formats, creating frequent confusion. Historically, it identifies a Phoenix Subtitles script, a legacy text-based format developed by the Phoenix Japanimation Society for anime overlays. These files are incompatible with modern media players like VLC and require conversion to SRT or VTT for use on web platforms and Smart TVs. In the software development sector, .PJS serves as a Project Suite file for TestComplete by SmartBear, storing references to automated test scripts in an XML structure. A significant volume of .PJS files are also encrypted database backups from the Phoenix Jail System; these are proprietary, binary blobs often exceeding 100MB that cannot be opened or converted by consumer tools. Lastly, researchers using Pajek for network analysis may encounter .PJS as a project definition file. Friction arises because users often mistake the unreadable Jail System backups for media files, or attempt to play TestComplete XML files as video subtitles.
