About PGX files
The .PGX extension represents a collision of three distinct technical worlds, creating significant confusion for users trying to open them.
First, in the realm of imaging, a .PGX file is often a JPEG 2000 verification file, specifically a Portable Graymap extension used to test implementation standards. unlike standard JP2 files, these raw raster images often lack standard headers and metadata, meaning most web browsers and default photo viewers (like Windows Photos or Mac Preview) simply cannot render them. They are uncompressed and inefficient for storage. To make these usable for web or print, you should convert them to JPG or PNG.
Second, in industrial automation, .PGX refers to a Project Page file used by Cimon SCADA software (specifically CimonD or CimonX). These files contain proprietary HMI (Human Machine Interface) designs that are locked to the manufacturer's ecosystem. Engineers often struggle to share these designs with stakeholders who lack the expensive SCADA license. Converting these layouts to PDF allows for easy archival and review without requiring the original software.
Third, .PGX files are found in robotics as VAL3 program files for Stäubli robots. These are typically XML-based text files defining robotic movements and logic. While you can open them with a text editor, raw XML is hard to read for non-developers. Converting VAL3 code to PDF or formatted TXT is the standard workflow for documentation and compliance archiving.
Convert.Guru analyzes your PGX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert PGX file to ISO, IMG, DMG, VHD, VMDK, VDI, HDD, QCOW, QCOW2, RAW, VBOX or OVA, you can use Cimon or OpenJPEG or similar software from the "Industrial Automation & Imaging" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert VFD, DMG, OVA, IMA, VBOX, ADF, PVS, VHD, OVF, ISO, DSK or IMG files to PGX, try Cimon or OpenJPEG or another comparable tool in the "Industrial Automation & Imaging" category.
The PGX Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PGX converter.
