About PGM files
A .pgm file is most commonly a Portable Graymap image, a simple raster format designed by Jef Poskanzer as part of the Netpbm open-source graphics library. These files represent grayscale images using either plain text (ASCII) or binary data to define pixel intensity, making them extremely easy for software to parse but inefficient for general use. While popular in academic research, computer vision, and legacy UNIX environments, .pgm files pose significant challenges for modern workflows: they are rarely supported by standard web browsers, cannot store color data, and the ASCII variants often result in file sizes significantly larger than compressed alternatives. To view, share, or publish these images, users should convert them to PNG for lossless quality, JPG for web compatibility, or PDF for archiving. Simply drag and drop your file to convert.guru to instantly visualize the content and transform it into a usable format.
Note: A small percentage of .pgm files are CNC program files used by SCM Group Xilog software for woodworking machinery. These contain machine instructions rather than image data.

The PGM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PGM converter.
