About PFT files
A .PFT file is most commonly an XML-formatted proofreading style sheet created by Intelligent Editing PerfectIt. It contains custom grammar rules, spelling preferences, and formatting checks used to enforce consistency across large documents. Less frequently, it functions as a proprietary photo album project file used by legacy software like Serif PagePlus or PageFlip Wizard, or even an obsolete ChiWriter printer font.
You can open and edit the main style sheet type using PerfectIt. Because the underlying structure of a PerfectIt .PFT file is standard XML, you can also open it in any basic text editor, like Notepad++ or VS Code, to view the raw data.
The primary disadvantage of a .PFT file is its strict association with specialized, paid proofreading software. If you send a .PFT file to a colleague who does not have a PerfectIt license, they cannot easily apply the rules to their DOCX files. Legacy album and font .PFT files are even more problematic, as they rely on discontinued software that modern web browsers and operating systems do not support.
If you need to review proofreading rules outside of PerfectIt, converting the .PFT file to XML or TXT is highly recommended. For legacy photo albums, standard conversion fails; you should instead aim to extract embedded raster images (like JPG or PNG) rather than trying to convert the whole proprietary wrapper.
Proprietary project files and data wrappers are notoriously difficult to convert because standard online converters lack the specific algorithms to read them. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects standard XML text or embedded images inside the .PFT file, viewing or extracting the content may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your PFT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert PFT file to TTF, OTF, WOFF, WOFF2, EOT, SVG, BDF, PCF, FNT, FON, PFM or AFM, you can use PerfectIt or similar software from the "Proofreading Rules & Styles" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

The PFT Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PFT converter.
