A .pfe file is primarily a proprietary project file created by Pipe Flow Expert, a specialized tool for designing and analyzing hydraulic pipe networks. These files contain complex engineering data - including node elevations, pump curves, and fluid properties - stored in a binary format that standard text editors or CAD viewers cannot open. Users often receive these files needing only to view the schematic or check calculation results, but find themselves blocked by the requirement for a paid software license.
A secondary but significant use of the extension is for legacy configuration files in Kepware KEPServerEX, used in industrial automation to define OPC server tags and driver settings. Unlike modern JSON-based configs, these older .pfe files are often version-locked.
For Pipe Flow Expert files, the most practical workflow is converting to PDF for sharing schematics, XLSX for analyzing pressure/flow data, or DXF for importing the geometry into AutoCAD. For Kepware files, the goal is typically migration to JSON or CSV for documentation or upgrading to newer server versions.
