About PFW files
The .PFW file extension is primarily associated with Pipe Flow Wizard, a specialized engineering utility used to calculate fluid flow rates and pressure drops in pipe networks. These files function as compressed XML-based project containers that store critical hydraulic data, including pipe length, internal diameter, elevation changes, and fitting types. Unlike standard drawings, .PFW files contain active mathematical models used for "What If?" calculations.
A common friction point for engineers is that .PFW files are proprietary and cannot be opened directly in standard CAD software like AutoCAD or spreadsheet tools like Microsoft Excel. To share these designs with clients who lack the software, users must typically convert the calculation results into a static report.
Alternatively, the extension is used for Platform Firmware updates, most notably by Pentair for their IntelliCenter pool control systems. In this context, the file is a binary blob (e.g., update-ocp-1-047.pfw) intended strictly for hardware flashing via USB and cannot be opened or edited on a PC.
Less frequently, .PFW refers to ASD PipeFlow project files used by Securiton for designing aspirating smoke detector networks. Like the fluid dynamics files, these are specialized design files requiring specific vendor software to view or modify.
Convert.Guru analyzes your PFW file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The PFW Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PFW converter.
