About PBC files
The .pbc file extension is most commonly a PostgreSQL database backup file created by the pg_dump utility. It is also heavily used for network configurations in PROFIBUS hardware systems, encrypted server backups for Proofpoint Protection Server, and phonebook backups via MOBILedit!. These files act as highly specific data containers for proprietary system restoration. To manage database dumps, administrators use PostgreSQL. Network configuration files require specialized diagnostic tools from Molex or SST to parse their internal Microsoft Compound architecture. Working with a .pbc file is frustrating because the format is strictly proprietary and context-dependent. A PostgreSQL .pbc dump is a custom binary format that requires command-line tools to restore and cannot be opened in standard text editors or web browsers. Proofpoint configurations are entirely encrypted and useless without the original hardware appliance. Users often need to convert these files just to read the data without paying for expensive, specialized software subscriptions or setting up complex local database servers. For database backups, the ideal conversion targets are standard SQL or CSV files. Converting to SQL makes the data portable to any relational database management system, though some PostgreSQL-specific constraints might be lost. For phonebook backups, converting to VCF (vCard) allows immediate import into modern smartphones and email clients. This file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert because standard online converters fail to process the overlapping, closed structures. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

The PBC Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PBC converter.
