About PEA files

A .PEA file is a compressed archive created by the open-source utility PeaZip. Standing for Pack Encrypt Authenticate, this format was designed with a heavy focus on security and data integrity, offering features like authenticated encryption and rigorous checksums that standard formats often lack. While excellent for personal backups where data corruption is a concern, the .PEA format presents significant friction for sharing. It is not supported by standard operating system tools like Windows Explorer, macOS Archive Utility, or even popular third-party tools like WinRAR or the base installation of 7-Zip without specific plugins.

Because of this proprietary lock-in, sending a .PEA file to a colleague or client usually results in them asking how to open it. To resolve compatibility issues, the best workflow is to convert the file to a universally accepted format. For general distribution, convert to ZIP, which opens natively on almost all devices. For large datasets where file size matters, convert to 7Z. For Linux or server environments, TAR or GZ are preferred standards. In rare scientific contexts, a .PEA file might be an NMR echo peak data file generated by Niumag WIN-MRIXP software, which is completely incompatible with archive tools.
