About PEA files
A .PEA file is a secure compressed archive format designed specifically for the open-source PeaZip utility. Standing for Pack, Encrypt, Authenticate, the format was built to solve specific data security challenges by providing multi-volume splitting, flexible checksums, and authenticated encryption in a single pass. In niche scenarios, .PEA files also appear as packed executables for eMule, asset archives in the Ren'Py visual novel engine, or even NMR echo peak data generated by scientific WIN-MRIXP software. Despite its robust security features, the .PEA format suffers from a major practical disadvantage: a complete lack of universal compatibility. Unlike standard ZIP or RAR files, .PEA is not natively supported by Windows, macOS, iOS, or Android web browsers. If you send a .PEA file to a client or colleague, they will likely be unable to open it without downloading and installing the standalone PeaZip software. This proprietary-like limitation makes it highly frustrating for general file sharing. To resolve this, the most practical solution is to convert the .PEA archive into a widely supported target format like ZIP, 7Z, or TAR. Extracting and repacking the files ensures that anyone can access the contents using native operating system tools, without sacrificing basic compression benefits. Because .PEA utilizes specialized deflate-based compression and complex volume-spanning algorithms, standard online converters typically fail to process them. If the archive is unencrypted, our system can identify the embedded contents, allowing you to extract them or repackage them into a standard ZIP format seamlessly.
Convert.Guru analyzes your PEA file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert PEA file to ZIP, RAR, 7Z, TAR, GZ, BZ2, XZ, LZMA, CAB, ACE, ARJ or LHA, you can use PeaZip or similar software from the "Secure Compressed Archive Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert XXE, 7Z, Z, PAK, LHA, DEB, UUE, TAR, LZH, ZIP, PKG or RAR files to PEA, try PeaZip or another comparable tool in the "Secure Compressed Archive Storage" category.
The PEA Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PEA converter.
