About PBT files

The .PBT extension is a container of ambiguity, most frequently representing a PowerBuilder Target file or a ProBoards Theme package.

1. PowerBuilder Target (Developer):
Legacy enterprise applications built with PowerBuilder use .pbt files to define the workspace libraries (.pbl) and application hierarchy. These are simple text files (similar to .INI), yet users often struggle to open them without the expensive IDE.

2. Manticore Games Core (Gaming):
In modern gaming, the Core Platform uses .pbt files (like Tree.pbt or AssetManifest.pbt) to store game asset blueprints in a serialized text format. While human-readable, they are strictly formatted for the engine.

3. ProBoards Theme (Web):
Forum administrators use .pbt files to backup or share skins for ProBoards forums. These act as archives containing CSS and image references.

The Problem:
Users typically encounter .pbt files when trying to migrate legacy code, inspect game logic, or install a forum theme. Because Windows does not assign a default viewer, double-clicking results in an error. Furthermore, trying to "convert" a game asset directly to a standard 3D format like OBJ or FBX is often impossible because the file contains metadata references rather than raw geometry.

The Solution:

For Inspection (Developer/Game): Since PowerBuilder and Core files are text-based, the best "conversion" is often to TXT or PDF for documentation. You can force-open them with a text editor like Notepad++ to view the source code or asset hierarchy.
For ProBoards: These files are strictly for import via the ProBoards admin panel. Converting them to ZIP may allow you to extract internal assets, but this is experimental.
