About PARTIMG files
A .PARTIMG file is a compressed disk backup archive created by Partimage, a legacy open-source Linux utility. It stores an exact, block-by-block copy of a hard drive partition, saving space by only backing up the sectors that contain actual data. System administrators typically use these files for bare-metal disaster recovery, cloning hard drives, and mass computer deployment across network environments.
To read or restore these files, users usually boot into a live Linux environment like SystemRescue that includes the original Partimage utility. Because the software has not been actively updated since 2010, it severely lacks support for modern file systems, entirely failing to read ext4 or btrfs partitions.
The .PARTIMG format is notoriously rigid and presents serious usability disadvantages for modern computing. It acts as a specialized binary dump rather than an accessible archive. You cannot easily mount the file or extract individual folders directly in Windows or macOS; users are forced to restore the entire partition to an empty drive just to retrieve a single document. Furthermore, the archives are frequently split into multiple 2GB chunks (such as .partimg.000 and .partimg.001) to avoid legacy FAT32 file size limits, which complicates file management.
Directly converting a .PARTIMG file to standard image formats like ISO, IMG, or VHD is highly complex and typically requires restoring the partition first, then re-imaging it with a modern tool like Clonezilla.
Because this is a closed, specialized system-level format, standard online converters completely fail to process it. While unpacking raw partition data over a web browser is restricted, our analysis engine can inspect the binary headers and verify the internal file integrity to show you what you are dealing with.
Convert.Guru analyzes your PARTIMG file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert PARTIMG file to ISO, IMG, DMG, VHD, VMDK, VDI, HDD, QCOW, QCOW2, RAW, VBOX or OVA, you can use Partimage or similar software from the "Partition Backup Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert VFD, DMG, OVA, IMA, VBOX, ADF, PVS, VHD, OVF, ISO, DSK or IMG files to PARTIMG, try Partimage or another comparable tool in the "Partition Backup Storage" category.
The PARTIMG Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PARTIMG converter.
