About D71 files

The .D71 file format is a binary sector-by-sector copy of a double-sided 5.25-inch floppy disk formatted for the Commodore 1571 disk drive. It is primarily used with the Commodore 128 and Commodore 64 home computers. This format stores up to 340 KB (680 blocks) of data, which is exactly double the capacity of the standard D64 (Commodore 1541) disk image.

To open and run these files, retro computing enthusiasts use emulators like VICE or specialized disk management tools like DirMaster.

The main disadvantage of the .D71 format is its absolute lack of native support in modern operating systems. You cannot mount a .D71 file in Windows, macOS, or Linux because they do not recognize the proprietary CBM DOS file system. Furthermore, because it represents a double-sided disk, some older Commodore 64 emulators or strict 1541-drive setups will fail to read it properly, causing compatibility issues.

Users frequently need to convert .D71 files to the more widely supported D64 format (if the data fits on a single side) or extract the internal PRG (program) and SEQ (sequential) files to run or edit them individually.

This is a highly specialized legacy format. Standard file converters cannot process raw sector data. We can inspect the disk header, reveal the internal directory structure, and if our analysis detects supported underlying files, you can extract or convert them instantly.

Convert.Guru analyzes your D71 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted D80, D82 and D67 files.
