About OTRKEY files

An .otrkey file is an encrypted video archive created by OnlineTvRecorder.com (OTR), a cloud-based service for recording TV broadcasts. These files function as secure digital lockboxes: they contain standard video data (typically DivX AVI or H.264 MP4) but are encrypted to ensure only authorized users can view them.

Users typically encounter these files after downloading a recorded TV show from OTR mirrors. The Problem: You cannot open an .otrkey file directly in media players like VLC or Windows Media Player, nor can you convert it using standard video converters. Attempting to do so will result in error messages because the file header is scrambled.

The Solution: You must first decode the file using the OTR Decoder (or EasyDecoder) software. This process validates your OTR account credentials to ensure you have the right to view the recording. Once decoded, the .otrkey file is replaced by a playable video file (usually AVI).
