About OTM files

The .OTM extension most frequently identifies a Microsoft Outlook VBA Project file, specifically the VbaProject.otm. This binary container stores Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) macros, user forms, and automation scripts tailored for Microsoft Outlook.

While powerful for automating email workflows, .OTM files present significant friction for users. Because they are proprietary OLE Compound Files, you cannot open them in a standard text editor like Notepad++ to inspect the code. This is a major security headache; users cannot verify if a macro contains malicious code without loading it into Outlook, which itself poses a risk. Furthermore, migrating these macros to newer systems or backing them up as human-readable code is difficult due to the binary lock-in.

For auditing and safety, the best conversion workflow is extracting the internal code to plain TXT, BAS (Basic Source), or CLS (Class Module) files. This allows for safe code review and version control.

Secondary Formats: A small percentage of .OTM files may be OpenDocument Master Templates (used by LibreOffice) or Yu-Gi-Oh! Omega deck files (JSON-based). For OpenDocument files, users typically convert to PDF for archiving or DOCX for broader compatibility. For Yu-Gi-Oh! decks, converting to JSON or TXT reveals the card data structure.

The OTM Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our OTM converter.
