To convert other file formats to the "Mac App / Takeoff Project" file type, you need software like On-Screen Takeoff or a similar tool.

About OSX files

A .OSX file generally serves one of two completely distinct purposes. It is either an obsolete PowerPC executable used by Mac OS Classic, or a data project file for On-Screen Takeoff, a specialized construction estimating software.

The Mac OS executable format contains compiled code designed specifically for legacy PowerPC processors. The main disadvantage is that these files are obsolete. Modern Intel or Apple Silicon Macs cannot run them without emulation. Furthermore, you cannot "convert" an old Mac executable into a modern macOS APP or a Windows EXE. You must use emulators like SheepShaver to open them.

Alternatively, .OSX files store estimating projects for On-Screen Takeoff. This format is highly restrictive and proprietary, requiring an expensive software subscription to open properly. Standard online converters fail to process it because the visual estimating data only makes sense inside the original software.

However, the On-Screen Takeoff variant is often built using standard XML formatting underneath. If you lack the software, extracting the raw data to CSV, XML, or TXT is your best workaround, though you will lose visual plan layouts and software-specific calculations.

Just drag and drop your file into convert.guru to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. Our engine will check the file signature. If it is a closed executable, we will tell you. If our analysis detects the supported XML-based structure of a Takeoff file, you can instantly inspect the internal content and extract the raw text data.

Convert.Guru analyzes your OSX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted RSRC, XIP and BOM files.

The OSX Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our OSX converter.
