About OSX files
The .osx file extension represents two distinct, incompatible formats that often confuse users due to their naming.
1. Legacy Mac PowerPC Executable (Primary Use): Most commonly, this is a Preferred Executable Format (PEF) file used by Classic Mac OS and early Mac OS X versions (pre-2006). These files contain binary machine code for the PowerPC architecture.
The Problem: Modern Macs (Intel or Apple Silicon) cannot run these files natively. Support for PowerPC apps (via Rosetta) was dropped in OS X Lion (10.7) in 2011. Trying to open them results in an "Application cannot be opened" error.
The Solution: You cannot "convert" this executable to a modern app like a Word doc. To run it, you must use an emulator like SheepShaver or QEMU.
2. On-Screen Takeoff XML (Construction Industry): In the construction sector, an .osx file is an XML-based exchange format generated by On-Screen Takeoff (now part of ConstructConnect). It contains project data, measurements, and overlay information used for construction estimating.
The Problem: These files are text-based but proprietary in structure. Without the expensive host software (often costing thousands), the data is hard to interpret.
The Solution: Because it is XML, you can convert the text data to CSV or XLSX to analyze bid numbers in Microsoft Excel. For archiving, the visual plan data is best converted to PDF.
Convert.Guru analyzes your OSX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert OSX file to EXE, MSI, APP, DMG, DEB, RPM, PKG, RUN, SH, BAT, CMD or COM, you can use On-Screen Takeoff or similar software from the "Legacy Mac Executable" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert JAR, APP, SCR, IPA, COM, AAB, PS1, DMG, VBS, EXE, XAPK or MSI files to OSX, try On-Screen Takeoff or another comparable tool in the "Legacy Mac Executable" category.
The OSX Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our OSX converter.
