About OSF files

The .OSF file extension is most commonly used as an application data package for OsmAnd, a popular offline mobile map and navigation application. These files act as compressed containers used to export, share, or back up user configurations, favorite locations, and map layers.

While incredibly useful on a mobile device, .OSF files present a major disadvantage on desktop operating systems: they are not natively recognized. Without the OsmAnd application installed, double-clicking the file yields an error. This reliance on a specific mobile app makes the format frustrating for users who want to view their saved tracks or map points on a larger screen. Standard online converters frequently fail to process .OSF files because they do not recognize the specific application metadata inside.

Under the hood, an OsmAnd .OSF file is actually a standard ZIP archive. It contains internal files like GPX for tracks, OBF for maps, and XML or JSON for settings. The best workaround is to rename the file extension to ZIP and extract the contents. Once extracted, you can access your route data in universal formats like GPX, which can be loaded into standard GIS software.

In completely separate use cases, .OSF files are used by ESET security software as quarantined EXE files. ESET renames malicious executables to .OSF to prevent accidental execution. Other obscure uses include Dutch construction specifications and Russian educational curriculums based on raw XML.

Because the extension serves multiple disconnected purposes, identifying the exact file type is the critical first step.

Convert.Guru analyzes your OSF file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted GPX, DOCX, PDF, PNG, ZIP, GZ, LZ and PVZ files.
