About OSDX files
An .OSDX file is an OpenSearch Description file, a standardized XML format used to describe a search engine's interface. These files allow web browsers like Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Microsoft Edge to automatically discover and add a website's search engine to the user's browser bar. In the Windows ecosystem, they are also known as Search Connector Description Files, allowing Windows Explorer to perform "Federated Searches" on remote servers directly from the desktop.
The catch with .OSDX files is their "executable" behavior despite being simple text. When you double-click one, your operating system attempts to install it as a search provider rather than opening it for viewing. This often fails on incompatible platforms (like macOS or Android) or executes blindly without letting you inspect the target URLs first. Users frequently need to convert these files to XML or TXT to audit the source code, extract the search template URL, or modify the parameters. For documentation or archiving the search configuration without risking accidental installation, converting to PDF is the ideal solution.
Convert.Guru analyzes your OSDX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted CACHE, GIF89A and SHTM files.
The OSDX Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our OSDX converter.
