A .OR2 file is a proprietary data file created by Lotus Organizer version 2, an obsolete Personal Information Manager (PIM) originally developed by Lotus Software and later acquired by IBM. These files store user calendars, address books, to-do lists, and personal notes.
This format is severely outdated. Originating in the 1990s, the .OR2 format relies on a closed, undocumented binary structure. The primary disadvantage of this format is its complete lack of interoperability. Modern operating systems like Windows 11 and macOS cannot run the original 16-bit or early 32-bit software required to open these files natively. Users attempting to access decades-old contact lists or historical calendars are often locked out of their own data.
Users typically want to convert .OR2 files to modern, standardized formats. Address books should be converted to CSV or VCF (vCard) files, while calendar events are best exported to ICS (iCalendar) format for use in modern applications like Google Calendar or Microsoft Outlook.
