The .OR2 file is a legacy database format generated by Lotus Organizer 2.0, a once-dominant Personal Information Manager (PIM) developed by Lotus Development Corporation (later acquired by IBM). These files function as digital binders, storing integrated calendars, contacts, to-do lists, and notepads in a proprietary binary structure.
The main problem with .OR2 files is severe obsolescence. Because Lotus Organizer 2 was designed for the 16-bit Windows 3.1 era, the original software is virtually impossible to run natively on modern 64-bit operating systems like Windows 11 or macOS. This creates a "digital lock-in" where valid data exists but is inaccessible without complex virtualization or legacy hardware. Furthermore, the format is not human-readable; opening it in a text editor yields garbled code, not your contact list.
To recover data from an .OR2 file, the best path is conversion to open standards. For address books and contact lists, converting to CSV is ideal, as it allows immediate import into Microsoft Excel or modern email clients. For calendar history and appointments, converting to the ICS (iCalendar) standard ensures compatibility with Google Calendar and Outlook. For strictly archival purposes - where you need to prove an appointment existed on a specific date - converting the visual output to .PDF/A is the most reliable method.
