The .OMN file extension represents a classic collision between proprietary document workflows and open academic standards. Most commonly, you will encounter this file as an OmniPage Project created by Kofax OmniPage (formerly Nuance). These files are not final documents; they are complex containers holding scanned images, recognized text, layout zones, and OCR training data. The friction arises when users treat them like PDF or DOCX files - they are proprietary, often exceed 50MB, and require an expensive software license just to view. You cannot open them in a standard web browser or Microsoft Word.
Alternatively, in academic and semantic web circles, an .OMN file contains an ontology written in Manchester Syntax. These are text-based definitions used by tools like Protégé to model relationships between data concepts. While human-readable, they are rarely compatible with standard XML-based parsers or visualization tools.
