About OMG files
The .OMG file extension primarily identifies an O&O DiskImage backup file or a Sony OpenMG protected audio file. Disk images store sector-by-sector copies of a hard drive for system restoration. OpenMG files store DRM-encrypted audio using the ATRAC3 codec. Backups are mounted using O&O DiskImage, while audio files require legacy software like Sony SonicStage. Both formats are heavily restricted and frustrating for users. O&O backups are proprietary, frequently exceed hundreds of gigabytes, and cannot be browsed natively by operating systems like Windows or macOS. Sony OpenMG audio files are infamous for their restrictive Digital Rights Management (DRM), tying playback to specific hardware and blocking standard media players completely. Converting an O&O image directly is impractical; instead, you must extract its contents into standard files like PDF, DOCX, or JPG. For OpenMG audio, the target should be MP3, FLAC, or WAV to ensure playback across modern devices. These file formats are exceptionally difficult to open or convert due to O&O's closed-source compression and Sony's military-grade DRM encryption. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible on convert.guru. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

The OMG Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our OMG converter.
