The most common .OMG file is a system backup created by O&O DiskImage. These are exact sector-based copies of a hard drive used for disaster recovery. The Problem: You cannot open these files in Windows Explorer, and they are useless without the original software. Users often encounter these when trying to restore data from an old external drive or attempting to virtualize a physical machine.
Solution: You must use O&O DiskImage (typically the "Professional" or "Server" edition). The software includes a built-in tool to convert .OMG files directly to VHD (Virtual Hard Disk), allowing you to mount the backup in VirtualBox or Hyper-V.
If your file is a music track from the early 2000s (e.g., from a MiniDisc or VAIO), it is a Sony OpenMG Audio file. The Problem: These files use ATRAC3 compression wrapped in aggressive DRM (Digital Rights Management). They were designed to prevent copying and are locked to the specific hardware or SonicStage installation that created them.
Solution: Modern converters like FFmpeg cannot decrypt these files. The only reliable method is to locate a working installation of SonicStage (often requiring a Windows XP Virtual Machine), authorize the library, and use the "Burn to CD" feature to create a standard Audio CD, which can then be ripped back to MP3 or FLAC.
