The .OM file extension primarily represents an Offline Model used within the Huawei Ascend AI platform and the MindSpore framework. These files store compiled artificial intelligence models optimized for execution on Huawei's specialized Neural Processing Units (NPUs). In a secondary use case, .OM files act as 3D dental scan data files utilized by 3Shape dental software or OpenMesh libraries.
Users often face significant challenges with .OM files because they are highly proprietary and restricted by their ecosystems. For AI models, the .OM format is a compiled, hardware-specific binary. It requires the Huawei CANN (Compute Architecture for Neural Networks) toolkit to run and cannot be natively executed on standard hardware like Nvidia GPUs or Intel CPUs. For dental applications, 3Shape locks clinical data inside the .OM container, forcing dental laboratories to pay for expensive, subscription-based software to simply view the 3D scans.
