About CPN files
The .CPN file extension is primarily used for two completely different purposes: as an XML-based Coloured Petri Net model for CPN Tools or as proprietary game data (such as campaigns for Age of Empires and character profiles for Grim Dawn). It is also occasionally used as a software license coupon for Reality XP add-ons.
When used as a Coloured Petri Net model, the file contains complex mathematical structures stored in standard XML. This makes the format bulky but readable. Conversely, when used for gaming, .CPN files are closed, proprietary binary data files locked to the specific game engine. They often contain encrypted save states or level triggers that no standard software can read.
Because these files are either niche academic models or closed video game assets, standard online converters fail to process them. You cannot magically convert a game campaign into a standard document or video. For CPN models, the best approach is to open them in their native software and export them to vector images like SVG or documents like PDF for sharing.
This file format is difficult to open because it lacks standardized media headers. If our analysis detects the underlying XML of a Petri Net model, we can extract and show you the text content instantly.
Convert.Guru analyzes your CPN file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert CPN file to EXE, ISO, BIN, CUE, PAK, WAD, PK3, PK4, BSP, MAP, SAV or DAT, you can use CPN Tools or similar software from the "Modeling and Game Data Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MOD, BIN, CFG, SCX, DAT, MPQ, LOG, CUE, INI, EXE, SCM or ISO files to CPN, try CPN Tools or another comparable tool in the "Modeling and Game Data Storage" category.
The CPN Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CPN converter.
