About CPN files

The .CPN extension serves two distinct, incompatible masters, creating significant confusion for users. Primarily, it denotes a Coloured Petri Net model created by CPN Tools. These are ostensibly XML-based text files used for simulating concurrent systems, but their complex internal schema makes them unreadable in standard text editors and incompatible with generic diagramming software like Microsoft Visio. To include these diagrams in reports or web pages, you must convert the proprietary rendering into standard formats like PDF or PNG.

Alternatively, a .CPN file may be a binary campaign file for Age of Empires II or Age of Mythology. These are strictly proprietary containers holding scenario progression data. They cannot be opened by standard archiving tools (like 7-Zip) and require specific game engine modifications or hex editing to extract individual scenarios (SCX files).

Convert.Guru analyzes your CPN file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted MDL, RBXM and DRN files.

The CPN Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CPN converter.
