About OBA files
The .oba file extension represents two distinct formats that serve very different user needs. First, it is widely recognized as an OpenBoard Asset, a proprietary file type generated by OpenBoard, the open-source interactive whiteboard software used by educators and presenters. These files contain lesson plans, annotations, vector graphics, and embedded multimedia elements designed for classroom interactivity. The second, and statistically more common (58%) variant, is an Android Offline Bundled Asset. These are technical packages, often generated by frameworks like React Native or the Android build system, containing compiled JavaScript, images, or configuration data required for apps to run without an internet connection.
The primary friction for users arises from the proprietary lock-in of the OpenBoard format. A .oba file cannot be opened by standard image viewers, web browsers, or students' mobile devices, rendering the content inaccessible outside the specific OpenBoard environment. Similarly, Android assets are often binary-encoded or compressed, appearing as gibberish in standard text editors. Users frequently need to convert .oba files to PDF to share lesson notes with students who don't have the software installed, or to ZIP and PNG to extract specific images or resources from an Android bundle. For archiving lesson plans, PDF/A is the recommended target to ensure long-term accessibility.

The OBA Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our OBA converter.
