About TIVO files
A .tivo file is a DRM-encrypted video container created by a TiVo digital video recorder. It wraps a standard MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 video broadcast in a proprietary protection layer. Originally managed using TiVo Desktop, playback strictly requires a specific 10-digit Media Access Key (MAK) linked to the user's TiVo account. The format is heavily restricted and highly disadvantaged for modern use. You cannot play .tivo files natively on smartphones, modern web browsers, or most third-party media players like VLC. Furthermore, the files are often gigabytes in size and tied to obsolete desktop software. To make the video usable outside the TiVo ecosystem, you must decrypt and convert it. Convert to MP4 for seamless playback on mobile devices and web browsers. Convert to MKV for high-quality archival storage. Just drag and drop your file here to analyze and convert it securely right in your browser - free, online, and without installing software.

The TIVO Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our TIVO converter.
