Convert NVP to another file type
To convert your NVP file to another format, you need NVivo or other Database software.
Convert a file to NVP
To convert other file formats to the "Qualitative Research Project" file type, you need software like NVivo or a similar tool.
About NVP files
The .NVP file is the proprietary project database used by the Windows version of NVivo, a leading software for qualitative data analysis (QDA). These files function as complex containers that store your entire research architecture - including coded transcripts, memos, node hierarchies, sentiment analysis, and relationships.
Because .NVP files are strictly proprietary databases (often built on SQL Server LocalDB), they cannot be opened by standard text editors, web browsers, or Microsoft Excel. A major source of friction for researchers is operating system incompatibility: macOS users cannot directly open .NVP files and must use the distinct .NVPX format, requiring a specific project conversion process that often results in feature loss (e.g., missing framework matrices). Additionally, version locking is aggressive - a file opened in a newer version (e.g., NVivo 14) is permanently upgraded and becomes unreadable by older versions (e.g., NVivo 12).
To share data with non-researchers or switch to open standards, you should convert the project. For interoperability with other QDA tools like ATLAS.ti or MAXQDA, the best target is the REFI-QDA Project standard (.qdpx). For general reporting and archiving, users typically export specific components: codebooks to XLSX, memos to DOCX, and visualizations to PDF.
Convert.Guru analyzes your NVP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert NVP file to INI, CFG, CONF, CONFIG, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, ENV, PROPERTIES or RC, you can use NVivo or similar software from the "Qualitative Data Analysis Project" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert ZSHRC, CONF, RCFILE, GITCONFIG, RC, PLIST, BASHRC, CONFIG, PROFILE, INI, PREFS or CFG files to NVP, try NVivo or another comparable tool in the "Qualitative Data Analysis Project" category.
The NVP Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our NVP converter.
