Convert NVP to another file type
To convert NVP projects to another format, you need NVivo or other Database software.
Convert a file to NVP
To convert other file formats to the "Qualitative Research Data" file type, you need software like NVivo or a similar tool.
About NVP files
The .NVP file extension represents an NVivo for Windows Project file. Researchers use these files to store qualitative and mixed-methods data, including interview transcripts, survey results, audio files, and video clips, alongside the analytical coding (nodes) applied to them.
To open a .NVP file natively, you need NVivo, a specialized and expensive software package originally developed by QSR International and now managed by Lumivero.
The primary disadvantage of the .NVP format is its heavily proprietary nature and reliance on a costly subscription. The file is essentially a closed database container. If you receive an .NVP file from a colleague and do not have an active NVivo license, you cannot simply open it in a web browser or standard text editor. It locks the researcher's hard work behind a paywall, making collaboration with non-licensed users incredibly frustrating.
Researchers usually need to export the contents of this file to standard, accessible formats. The best target formats for the extracted data are CSV or XLSX for tabular data, node matrices, and survey results, or DOCX and TXT for raw transcripts and reports. Note that exporting directly flattens the relational database structure, so interactive coding links will be lost.
This file format is notoriously difficult to open or convert online. Because it is a closed, proprietary format acting as a complex local database, standard online converters fail to process it. Often, only the original NVivo software can properly read the internal relational links or export the data. Our platform will inspect the file structure and show text or internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format (such as standard SQL tables), partial data viewing or extraction may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your NVP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert NVP file to INI, CFG, CONF, CONFIG, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, ENV, PROPERTIES or RC, you can use NVivo or similar software from the "Qualitative Data Analysis Project" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert ZSHRC, CONF, RCFILE, GITCONFIG, RC, PLIST, BASHRC, CONFIG, PROFILE, INI, PREFS or CFG files to NVP, try NVivo or another comparable tool in the "Qualitative Data Analysis Project" category.
The NVP Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our NVP converter.
