About NVB files

The .NVB file extension is an NVivo Project Backup file used in qualitative data analysis. Researchers use NVivo, developed by Lumivero, to organize, analyze, and find insights in unstructured data like interviews, surveys, and social media. Users frequently face challenges with .NVB files because the format is strictly proprietary. It requires an expensive, paid software subscription to open and locks your valuable research data inside a closed ecosystem. Standard online converters fail to process .NVB files because the file is a compressed proprietary database backup, not a standard document. You cannot easily convert it to a .PDF or .DOCX directly. Usually, only the original NVivo software can properly read, restore, or export the data. For better interoperability, you must restore the .NVB file to an active .NVP or .NVPX project inside the software. From there, your best conversion targets are .DOCX for text reports, .XLSX for tabular data, or .QDPX (the REFI-QDA standard) to migrate your coding to alternative research tools. While full database reconstruction requires the original app, our tools can inspect the file and often extract raw text or embedded content to rescue your data.

Convert.Guru analyzes your NVB file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted DOCX, NVP, NVCX and SRR files.

The NVB Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our NVB converter.
