The .NPD file extension is a proprietary binary log format generated by EIVA NaviPac, a leading software suite for offshore navigation and subsea construction. These files act as the primary "black box" recording for hydrographic surveys, storing real-time synchronized data from vessel sensors including GPS, gyroscopes, and echo sounders.
Because .NPD files are binary and highly specialized, they cannot be opened in standard text editors like Notepad++ or widespread GIS tools like QGIS without conversion. This creates a significant bottleneck for engineers and clients who need to access the raw survey data without an expensive NaviPac license. To make the data usable for reporting, post-processing, or charting, users must typically convert .NPD files to open formats. Common conversion targets include CSV for analysis in Microsoft Excel, DXF for plotting in AutoCAD, or XYZ for 3D bathymetric modeling.
