The .NPD file is a proprietary marine navigation data log. It is primarily used by offshore survey vessels to record geospatial tracking, sensor readings, and multibeam echosounder data. These files are highly complex and typically generated by specialized hydrographic software like EIVA NaviPac or QPS QINSy.
The main disadvantage of the .NPD format is its strictly proprietary, closed nature. You cannot open these files natively in standard operating systems, text editors, or spreadsheet tools. Because they encode high-frequency marine sensor data, accessing the information usually requires an expensive, specialized software license. This creates major bottlenecks when sharing raw survey data with clients or external researchers who do not own the software.
To make the data usable across different platforms, users often need to export or convert .NPD files into standard text-based formats like CSV or TXT for spreadsheet analysis, or XML for structured database integration. However, naive conversion can result in the loss of critical proprietary metadata or specific sensor calibration states.
