The .NML file extension primarily represents a Traktor Collection File used by Native Instruments Traktor. It stores DJ playlists, track metadata, cue points, loop markers, and beatgrids in an underlying XML-based structure. These files are essential for DJs because they preserve hours of track preparation work. However, they do not contain any actual audio data, only file paths pointing to the media files on the hard drive.
The main disadvantage of the .NML format is its rigid lock-in to the Native Instruments ecosystem. DJs looking to migrate their meticulously prepared sets to rival software like Rekordbox or Serato DJ cannot simply import an .NML file. The proprietary application-specific tags used for tempo grids and hot cues are not natively understood by competitor platforms.
