About NKM files

A .nkm file is a proprietary Multi-Instrument container used by Native Instruments Kontakt, the industry-standard software sampler. Unlike a standard NKI (which loads a single instrument like a piano), a .NKM file loads an entire ensemble - such as a piano, strings, and bass - simultaneously into the Kontakt rack, saving their routing, volume, and MIDI channel configurations.

The frustrating part for users is that .nkm files are not audio files; they are complex XML-based instruction lists that reference external sample data (usually NCW or WAV files). If you attempt to open this file without the associated sample library or with an older version of Kontakt, it will fail. Furthermore, because these files often rely on proprietary KSP Scripts (Kontakt Script Processor) for articulation and performance logic, they are notoriously difficult to convert to open formats like SoundFont or SFZ without losing functionality.

For most users, the goal is to hear the sound. The only reliable method is to load the .nkm into Kontakt (running inside a DAW like Ableton Live) and render/bounce the audio to WAV or MP3. For archival or editing purposes, you can use Kontakt's "Save As" feature to split the Multi back into individual NKI files. Third-party tools like Chicken Systems Translator can attempt to convert the patch structure to formats like EXS24 or Reason NN-XT, but expect significant data loss regarding scripts and effects.

Convert.Guru analyzes your NKM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted NKI, NKX, RAR, PDF, NCW and NKC files.

The NKM Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our NKM converter.
