About NH files
The .nh file is primarily a proprietary Chinese academic journal document distributed by Tsinghua Tongfang (CNKI). Researchers encounter these files when downloading dissertations or academic papers from the China National Knowledge Infrastructure database. To open them, users typically must install CAJViewer or NHReader. This can be a hassle. The format is entirely closed and proprietary. It requires specialized software with an interface that can be difficult for non-Chinese speakers to navigate. Furthermore, macOS support for CAJViewer is notoriously unreliable, and the format is completely unsupported by standard web browsers. Users urgently need to convert .nh files to PDF or DOCX to read them on standard mobile devices, share them with colleagues, or run them through translation software. Standard online converters almost always fail because the format's internal structure is unpublished and heavily restricted. Often, only the original CNKI software can reliably render the layout and export the data. Even if full layout conversion fails due to CNKI's proprietary restrictions, our analysis can often extract raw text or detect supported embedded formats.
