About NED files

A .ned file is primarily associated with OMNeT++, a discrete event simulation library used to model wired and wireless communication networks. These files define the network topology, describing how modules like routers, switches, and hosts connect using a high-level language. However, a significant portion of .ned files are also proprietary Entity Relationship (ER) diagrams created by Navicat, a premium database management tool.

The catch for users is that .ned files are essentially "blueprints" rather than usable assets. In the case of OMNeT++, the file is plain text code; while you can open it in Notepad, you cannot see the visual network diagram without compiling it inside the complex Eclipse-based OMNeT++ IDE. For Navicat users, the friction is proprietary lock-in: these diagram files cannot be opened by free tools or web browsers, forcing you to purchase a license just to view a database schema sent by a colleague. Users frequently need to convert these files to shareable formats. For simulation results, the best target is PDF or PNG for documentation. For Navicat models, converting to SQL allows you to recreate the database elsewhere, while SVG or PDF makes the diagram viewable for teams without the software.

Convert.Guru analyzes your NED file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted TML, VALUES, CONF and ENU files.

FAQ

If you want to convert NED file to ENU, JS, TS, PY, JAVA, CPP, C, CS, PHP, RB, GO or RS, you can use OMNeT++ or similar software from the "Network Simulation Topology" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert SH, PY, KT, PS1, SWIFT, LUA, PL, JAVA, SCALA, JS, VBS or TS files to NED, try OMNeT++ or another comparable tool in the "Network Simulation Topology" category.

The NED Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our NED converter.
