About NDPI files
The .NDPI file format is a proprietary digital pathology slide image created by Hamamatsu Photonics NanoZoomer slide scanners. Built on a multi-resolution, pyramidal TIFF structure, these files store whole-slide gigapixel images. Medical professionals and researchers use these files to digitally archive, analyze, and share digitized tissue samples.
Opening an .NDPI file without specialized medical imaging software is extremely difficult. The format is a non-standard TIFF variant containing complex image pyramids, proprietary metadata, and dimensions that routinely exceed 100,000 pixels across. Standard image viewers like Windows Photos, macOS Preview, or even web browsers lack the decoders to process this proprietary structure and will typically crash due to massive file sizes (often exceeding 1GB to 5GB). Official software like Hamamatsu NDP.view2 or specialized open-source solutions like OpenSlide and QuPath are required to properly read, navigate, or export the full slide data.
Users often need to convert .NDPI files to standard formats like TIFF, JPG, or PNG to share specific regions of interest in presentations, emails, or publications. However, because of the enormous file size, converting the entire whole-slide image to a single flat JPG is usually impossible without severely downscaling the resolution and losing diagnostic quality. Standard online image converters fail to process .NDPI files because they run out of memory trying to load the gigapixel canvas.
This is a highly specialized, closed format. Drag and drop your file to see what it is and convert it if supported on convert.guru. We can parse the file, extract embedded metadata, and inspect the internal structure. If our analysis detects a supported embedded thumbnail or lower-resolution layer, viewing or basic conversion may still be possible directly in your browser.
Convert.Guru analyzes your NDPI file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert NDPI file to TIFF, SVS, JPG, PDF, PNG, GIF, BMP, TIF, WEBP, ICO, CUR or PSD, you can use NDP.view2 or similar software from the "Whole Slide Image Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert RAW, PNG, AI, NEF, PSB, DNG, SVG, GIF, EPS, JPG, ARW or PDF files to NDPI, try NDP.view2 or another comparable tool in the "Whole Slide Image Storage" category.
The NDPI Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our NDPI converter.
