About NDPI files

The .NDPI file is a high-resolution digital pathology slide generated by Hamamatsu NanoZoomer scanners. These files are used in medical and research settings to store Whole Slide Images (WSI) at magnifications up to 40x or 80x, often resulting in file sizes exceeding 4GB.

While technically based on the TIFF format, .NDPI files contain proprietary metadata, custom JPEG restart markers, and "BigTIFF" offsets that cause standard image viewers like Windows Photo Viewer, Adobe Photoshop, or standard libtiff libraries to crash or display errors. A single file contains a "pyramid" of images at multiple resolutions, making it impossible to load the entire image into RAM on a standard computer.

For professional analysis, these files are best opened with NDP.view2 or QuPath. For general use, archiving, or publication, users typically convert .NDPI to standard BigTIFF format, or split the massive image into smaller JPEG or PNG tiles that can be handled by web browsers and standard editors.

Convert.Guru analyzes your NDPI file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted TIFF, SVS, JPG, ZIP, TIF, CZI, NBIB and WEBARCHIVE files.
