About NCT files

The .nct extension represents a split between two completely different industries: consumer media and construction compliance.

1. Nero CoverDesigner Template (Most Common for Consumers):
These files are vector-based design templates created by Nero CoverDesigner. Users create these to print custom labels, inlays, and booklets for CDs and DVDs. The file stores text, vector shapes, tracklists, and layout settings.
The Problem: The format is proprietary. If you don't have Nero installed (part of the Nero Platinum suite), you cannot open or print these files. Users often find old .nct projects and simply want to save them as a JPG or PDF to print elsewhere.

2. NCM Energy Database (Professional Use):
In the UK construction sector, .nct files are used by the National Calculation Methodology (NCM) and iSBEM software to calculate building energy efficiency.
The Secret: Despite the obscure extension, these are often standard JetDB (Microsoft Access) databases in disguise. Users typically need to convert these to CSV or XLS to analyze the raw data outside the government software.

Conversion Solutions:

For Nero Files: The most reliable method is using Nero CoverDesigner itself to "Print to PDF." Third-party tools like reaConverter claim support but may lose complex vector layering.
For NCM Files: A simple "hack" works best. Rename the file extension from .nct to mdb. You can then open it directly in Microsoft Access to view tables and export data to Excel.
