Convert NBES to another file type
To convert NBES files to another format, you need Emsisoft Decryptor or other Encoded software.
Convert a file to NBES
To convert other file formats to the "Ransomware Encrypted File" file type, you need software like Emsisoft Decryptor or a similar tool.
About NBES files
A .NBES file is not a standard document or image format; it is a user file that has been maliciously encrypted by the STOP/Djvu ransomware family. Typically, victims notice that their personal photos, databases, and archives (like JPG files from apps like BeautyPlus, or ZIP archives) have been renamed with an appended .nbes extension (e.g., photo.jpg.nbes). The ransomware utilizes strong AES-256 or Salsa20 encryption algorithms to lock the data, applying the new extension and dropping a _readme.txt ransom note in affected directories.
Because the data is fundamentally scrambled by military-grade encryption, standard file converters cannot process or 'save as' a .NBES file into a JPG or DOCX. The core disadvantage of this format is that it requires a unique, cryptographic private key to become readable again. Victims face severe real-world limits: the files cannot be opened by standard software, the data is held hostage, and the criminals demand a Bitcoin payment (often $490–$980) with zero guarantee of safe recovery.
While traditional conversion is impossible without removing the encryption layer, you can use specialized tools like the Emsisoft Decryptor to check if your files were locked with a generic offline key, which allows free decryption. If decrypted successfully, the files simply revert to their original target formats (like JPG, ZIP, or DOCX), restoring full functionality without losing quality.
Because .NBES is a locked, proprietary encryption container, standard online converters fail completely. Often, only the original decryption tool can properly read or export the data. However, convert.guru can still identify the file format, inspect the file header, and show text or internal content. Just drag and drop your file to see what it is and convert it if supported. If our analysis detects an intact underlying structure (for example, if the ransomware failed to encrypt the entire file), partial viewing or recovery of embedded content may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your NBES file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert NBES file to BASE64, HEX, BIN, ENC, CRYPT, AES, DES, RSA, PGP, GPG, ASC or KEY, you can use Emsisoft Decryptor or similar software from the "Malicious file encryption" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert CER, BIN, PEM, DER, KEY, P7S, PFX, ENC, P12, BASE64, P7B or HEX files to NBES, try Emsisoft Decryptor or another comparable tool in the "Malicious file encryption" category.
The NBES Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our NBES converter.
