A .NBES file is not a standard document or image format; it is a user file that has been maliciously encrypted by the STOP/Djvu ransomware family. Typically, victims notice that their personal photos, databases, and archives (like JPG files from apps like BeautyPlus, or ZIP archives) have been renamed with an appended .nbes extension (e.g., photo.jpg.nbes). The ransomware utilizes strong AES-256 or Salsa20 encryption algorithms to lock the data, applying the new extension and dropping a _readme.txt ransom note in affected directories.
Because the data is fundamentally scrambled by military-grade encryption, standard file converters cannot process or 'save as' a .NBES file into a JPG or DOCX. The core disadvantage of this format is that it requires a unique, cryptographic private key to become readable again. Victims face severe real-world limits: the files cannot be opened by standard software, the data is held hostage, and the criminals demand a Bitcoin payment (often $490–$980) with zero guarantee of safe recovery.
While traditional conversion is impossible without removing the encryption layer, you can use specialized tools like the Emsisoft Decryptor to check if your files were locked with a generic offline key, which allows free decryption.
