About NBES files

A .nbes file is not a standard document or image; it is a file that has been maliciously encrypted by a variant of the STOP/Djvu ransomware family. Users typically encounter this format after a malware infection, where their personal files (photos, videos, documents) are suddenly renamed with the .nbes extension (e.g., family_photo.jpg becomes family_photo.jpg.nbes).

The file itself contains your original data, but it has been locked with a sophisticated encryption algorithm (often AES or Salsa20). This renders the file unreadable by standard software like Microsoft Word or Adobe Photoshop. While the ransomware note (often named _readme.txt) demands payment for a decryption key, paying is strongly discouraged as there is no guarantee of recovery.

Conversion & Recovery:
Unlike a normal file conversion, you cannot simply "save as" a .nbes file back to JPG or DOCX. The encryption layer must be removed first. The only practical methods are:

  1. Offline Key Decryption: If the malware failed to contact its server during infection, it may have used a generic "offline key." Tools like the Emsisoft Decryptor can sometimes unlock these files for free.
  2. Backup Restoration: The most reliable method is deleting the infected files and restoring clean versions from an external drive or cloud backup.
  3. Original Format Recovery: Once decrypted, the file reverts to its original extension (e.g., JPG), allowing you to open it normally.

Convert.Guru analyzes your NBES file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted SSPQ, IMAGES and ERI files.

The NBES Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our NBES converter.
