About MSX files

The .MSX file format is highly specialized and serves multiple distinct purposes depending on the authoring software. Most frequently, it acts as a Watchfire Ignite digital sign message file. These files store text, animations, and scheduling instructions used by Watchfire LED displays, typically managed via the Watchfire Media Manager or Ignite software suite. Alternatively, .MSX files can function as Mass Spectrometry Data logs from COMET Vision monitoring systems, map snapshots from Mapshaper.org, or XML-based safety controller projects generated by Reer Mosaic Safety Designer.

These files are notoriously difficult to share because they are fragmented across unrelated industries. The primary disadvantage of an .MSX file is its strict software dependency. For instance, a Watchfire message file cannot be opened by a standard image viewer because it contains proprietary hardware-level display instructions, not standard video or raster data. This forces users to install specific, often restricted, software suites just to view the contents.

Standard online converters fail to process .MSX files because they lack the proprietary rendering engines required to interpret this specific hardware data. Converting an .MSX file to a standard format like PDF, JPG, or CSV usually requires booting up the original authoring software and using the native "Export" function.

Because these are closed formats, interacting with them without the native application is a challenge. Our system inspects the raw file structure. If we detect an underlying readable format - such as the standard XML used in Reer Mosaic projects or JSON within Mapshaper snapshots - we can extract the text and internal content, allowing you to bypass the need for specialized software.

Convert.Guru analyzes your MSX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted PWB, WF1 and HIS files.

The MSX Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MSX converter.
