About HIS files
The .his file extension primarily acts as a generic container for historical data. Because 'history' is a universal concept in software, the format is extremely fragmented. A .his file could be an aviation weather log from the Vaisala AviMet System, an XML-based chat history from Trillian, a Microsoft Jet/SQLite database, an X-ray flat panel image from PerkinElmer, or even a proprietary audio container from Her Interactive Nancy Drew games.
This extreme fragmentation is the biggest disadvantage of the .his format. You rarely know the underlying structure just by looking at the file name. Opening these files natively requires the exact software that created them, which is often obscure, highly specialized, or obsolete. Attempting to share a .his file with a colleague almost always results in an 'unsupported file type' error, and opening a binary database in a text editor will simply freeze your computer or display unreadable gibberish.
To make this data usable, conversion or extraction is strictly necessary. For text and XML logs, converting to CSV or TXT ensures compatibility with spreadsheet software and web browsers. For database variants (like JetDB or SQLite), exporting the tables to SQL or CSV allows you to archive the data securely. For Her Interactive audio containers, extracting the sound layers to MP3 or WAV is required for playback.
Convert.Guru analyzes your HIS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert HIS file to DB, SQLITE, SQLITE3, MDB, ACCDB, DBF, ODB, FDB, GDB, MYD, FRM or SQL, you can use Notepad++ or similar software from the "Historical Data Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert NDF, SQLITE3, BAK, RDB, SQL, DB4, MDF, MDB, LDF, DB, DB3 or SQLITE files to HIS, try Notepad++ or another comparable tool in the "Historical Data Storage" category.
The HIS Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our HIS converter.
