.MPY files are primarily compiled bytecode modules for MicroPython and CircuitPython. Developers use these files to execute pre-compiled Python code directly on hardware. This approach saves RAM and limited flash storage space on small microcontrollers. A smaller percentage of .MPY files are proprietary encrypted music files used by streaming services like KuGou and KuWo Music.
The main disadvantage of the .MPY bytecode format is its lack of human readability. Unlike standard PY scripts, you cannot open these files in a text editor to modify the code. If you lose the original source code, editing the module becomes a massive problem. Decompiling MicroPython bytecode back to readable text is extremely difficult, and you will permanently lose comments and formatting. Furthermore, .MPY files are strictly tied to specific firmware versions. Bytecode compiled for one MicroPython version frequently crashes on another.
For the audio variant, KuGou uses heavy DRM (Digital Rights Management) encryption. This proprietary lock prevents playback on standard media players like VLC. Users often face frustrating limits, such as requiring an active subscription to a specific mobile app just to listen to files stored on their own hard drive. Standard online converters fail to process .MPY files because they lack the specific version-dependent decompilers for bytecode, and they do not possess the proprietary decryption keys for the audio variants.
