A .modpkg file is a modification package built primarily for Minecraft Pocket Edition (PE). It bundles custom game modifications, such as JavaScript files for new mechanics, custom textures, and configuration files, into a single deployable asset. These packages are deployed using third-party Android apps, most notably BlockLauncher (formerly MCPELauncher). A smaller subset of these files is also used for client-side modifications in the MMORPG Blade & Soul.
The main disadvantage of the .modpkg format is that it acts as a proprietary black box. Modern mobile operating systems do not recognize the extension, making it difficult to edit or review the mod's contents for security or customization. Furthermore, as older versions of Minecraft PE become obsolete, users struggle to migrate these legacy mods into the modern .mcpack or .mcaddon formats used by current Bedrock editions. Opening the file directly requires the original launcher, which is often unsupported on newer Android updates.
The best workaround is extracting the file. Because the underlying architecture of a Minecraft .modpkg file is standard ZIP compression, converting or renaming it to ZIP allows you to extract the contents on a PC or Mac. Once extracted, you gain access to the raw JS, PNG, and JSON files.
