About MMZ files

A .mmz file functions primarily as either a MindManager compressed mind map or a MiraMon compressed geographic map. MindManager, an enterprise mind-mapping tool, uses this format to store large visual project outlines, brainstorming nodes, and embedded attachments. Alternatively, MiraMon, an advanced geographic information system (GIS) developed by CREAF and UAB, uses the extension to package spatial data layers, cartographic metadata, and styling configurations into one deployable file.

The main disadvantage of .mmz files is their highly proprietary and closed nature. MindManager requires a costly commercial subscription, while MiraMon relies on specialized, niche academic software. Native operating systems, web browsers, and standard office suites cannot open these files. Because the data is compressed into a binary archive, opening a .mmz file in a basic text editor will only display garbled, unreadable text.

Users typically need to convert MindManager .mmz files to standard formats like PDF or PNG for easy team sharing, or TXT and HTML to extract the raw outline data. MiraMon GIS files are best converted to universally accepted spatial formats like SHP (Shapefile) or GeoJSON to enable interoperability with mainstream tools like QGIS or ArcGIS.

This file format is difficult to convert directly because the internal schemas are undocumented, meaning only the original software can perfectly render the visual layout or export the geographic coordinates. Because many .mmz files use standard ZIP compression under the hood, our analysis can often detect the embedded XML or spatial layers, making partial viewing, data extraction, or conversion possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your MMZ file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted MMJB_MIME, HME and LSZ files.

The MMZ Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MMZ converter.
