About MLP files

The .MLP extension primarily represents a Meridian Lossless Packing audio file. Developed by Meridian Audio and later adopted as the core technology for Dolby TrueHD and Blu-ray surround sound, it stores multi-channel, high-resolution lossless audio. Alternatively, .MLP is used by MeshLab as an XML-based 3D mesh processing project file, or by legacy software like MCACES for JetDB cost estimates and the classic game Blood for graphics.

Opening a .MLP audio file directly is notoriously difficult. Native playback requires specialized, expensive hardware decoders or professional authoring suites. Standard media players often fail to recognize the surround sound channels. For the MeshLab variant, the file only stores references to 3D meshes, not the geometries themselves. This makes sharing the .MLP file useless unless you also bundle the original 3D models.

For audio workflows, convert .MLP to FLAC for universal lossless playback or WAV for professional editing. If you are sharing 3D data from MeshLab, you must export the actual geometries to OBJ, STL, or PLY formats instead of sharing the project file.
