The .MLM file extension represents a unique intersection of legacy office automation and communication. Primarily, it is a WordPerfect Macro file used by Corel WordPerfect to automate complex document tasks, essentially acting as a programmable script. Secondly, and significantly for archivists, it functions as a GroupWise Mail Message file. In older versions of Novell GroupWise (4.1–5.5), emails saved to disk were stored as .MLM files, which are technically just WordPerfect 5.1 documents wrapped with header information.
Users typically encounter these files when digging through old corporate backups or legal archives. The main challenge is that .MLM files are binary proprietary containers. You cannot simply double-click to open them in Microsoft Word or a web browser. Without the original WordPerfect software or a specialized conversion utility, the content - whether it's a vital email correspondence or a complex macro script - remains locked.
For archiving emails, the best practice is converting .MLM to PDF/A to preserve the text and metadata (Sender, Date, Subject) for the long term. For editing the content, converting to DOCX or RTF allows you to work with the text in modern word processors. If the file is a macro script, converting to TXT allows developers to inspect the underlying code logic without executing potentially unsafe commands.
