About ME files
The .me extension is highly unusual because it is not a standardized, singular format. Instead, it is most commonly used for plain text "Readme" files (typically named read.me) or deliberately used to disguise media files like ISO Base Media (MP4) videos and Ogg Vorbis (OGG) audio files. In niche cases, it acts as a "delete.me" temporary file or a Puppy Linux partition flag.
The main disadvantage of the .me extension is that operating systems like Windows and macOS do not know what application to associate with it. Double-clicking the file usually triggers a confusing "How do you want to open this file?" prompt. If the file is actually a 500MB disguised video, attempting to force it open in a text editor like Notepad will cause the application to freeze or crash.
To make the file usable, you need to identify its true nature and convert or rename it to standard target formats like TXT, MP4, or MP3. Standard online converters often fail to process .me files because they rely on the extension to guess the conversion path.
This is why this file format is difficult to open or convert blindly. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format - like an MP4 video header or plain text - viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your ME file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert ME file to ANIME, SE, PDF, MP3, WAV, AAC, FLAC, OGG, WMA, M4A, AIFF or OPUS, you can use VLC media player or similar software from the "Disguised Media or Readme Text" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MIDI, AAC, TTA, AU, WV, DTS, MID, FLAC, RA, MP3, PCM or WAV files to ME, try VLC media player or another comparable tool in the "Disguised Media or Readme Text" category.
The ME Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ME converter.
