About MDDATA files
The .mddata file extension is primarily used by Apple for internal iOS device backups created via iTunes or Apple Devices software on Windows and Mac. These files are typically completely obfuscated, meaning their original names and standard extensions (such as JPG or HEIC) have been stripped and replaced with a SHA-1 hash of their internal path. This makes the format inherently frustrating for users to deal with. Because the file lacks a standard extension, operating systems and web browsers cannot natively open or preview the contents. Standard online converters frequently fail to process them because they rely entirely on the file extension to guess the format, completely ignoring the internal binary data. You are essentially locked out of your own files without the original database index. Most commonly, an .mddata file is actually just a standard JPG photo, a SQLite database, or app-specific data hidden behind a cryptic name. To bypass these annoying limits, you need to identify the internal file signature. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. convert.guru ignores the proprietary wrapper and reads the actual internal structure. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format like a JPEG, viewing or conversion to PNG, PDF, or standard JPG will be instantly available.
Convert.Guru analyzes your MDDATA file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The MDDATA Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MDDATA converter.
