About MD2 files
The .MD2 file format is a legacy 3D model format primarily used by the 1997 first-person shooter game Quake II. Developed by id Software, it stores vertex animation data for characters, weapons, and items by saving the exact coordinate of every point across every single frame.
Opening these files natively is challenging today. You typically need specialized retro-modding utilities like Noesis or Blender equipped with community-built legacy import scripts.
Users need to convert .MD2 files because the format is highly obsolete. It does not support modern skeletal animation rigs, high-resolution textures, or Physically Based Rendering (PBR) materials. Modern game engines like Unreal Engine or Unity cannot read vertex-animated models natively, and most standard 3D viewers will completely fail to recognize the file.
To use these assets in modern workflows, conversion is mandatory. For broad 3D editing and modern game engine compatibility, convert to FBX, though you must be aware that exporting vertex animations to a modern skeletal format is difficult and animation data is often lost. For extracting static meshes, 3D printing, or simple rendering, convert to OBJ or STL. Just drag and drop your file here to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing software.

The MD2 Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MD2 converter.
