About MD2 files

The .MD2 file format is a legacy 3D model container originally developed by id Software for the Quake II engine (id Tech 2). Unlike modern formats that use skeletal animation (bones), MD2 relies on vertex animation (also known as morph target animation). This means every single frame of an animation stores the absolute position of every vertex in the mesh.

While iconic in retro gaming history, this architecture is a main issue for modern workflows. First, the files are inefficient; storage requirements scale linearly with animation length, not complexity. Second, the vertex coordinates are compressed to 8-bit precision to save space, resulting in the infamous "vertex swimming" or "jitter" seen in older games. Third, they do not support modern PBR materials or complex hierarchies. Users typically convert MD2 files to OBJ or STL to extract static poses for 3D printing, or to GLB/GLTF to utilize the models in modern web-based viewers. For game development in engines like Unity or Unreal Engine, converting to FBX is necessary, though you will lose the vertex animation data unless the target engine specifically supports legacy morph targets. Just drag and drop to determine the format, view, and convert it.

The MD2 Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MD2 converter.
