Convert MBI to another file type
To convert your MBI file to another format, you need MBAL or other Data software.
Convert a file to MBI
To convert other file formats to the "Proprietary Data Model" file type, you need software like MBAL or a similar tool.
About MBI files
The .MBI extension is a "container of chaos," shared by four completely unrelated technical environments. Most commonly (approx. 27%), it functions as a Firmware Component for Mediasat or M-Vision set-top boxes. These are raw binary files used to patch device operating systems; they are not designed to be opened on a PC, and modifying them can permanently damage (brick) your hardware.
In the energy sector, an .MBI file is a Material Balance Reservoir Model created by the Petroleum Experts (Petex) MBAL software. These files contain critical engineering data for modeling oil and gas reservoirs. The friction here is high: these files are proprietary and strictly locked to the IPM Suite, meaning you cannot view the data without an expensive industrial license.
For digital readers, an .MBI file might simply be a disguised image resource from a Mobipocket eBook. In this specific case, the file is often just a standard Portable Network Graphic (PNG) with a different extension.
Best Conversion Targets:
For eBook/Images: If the file header contains "PNG", simply rename it to PNG or convert it to JPG or WebP for universal viewing.
For Engineering (MBAL): There is no direct converter. You must use Petroleum Experts software to export the dataset to XLSX (Excel) or PDF for reporting.
For MagicISO: If it is a Multi-Bootable Information file, use MagicISO to integrate it into a standard ISO disk image.
Convert.Guru analyzes your MBI file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert MBI file to ISO, IMG, DMG, VHD, VMDK, VDI, HDD, QCOW, QCOW2, RAW, VBOX or OVA, you can use MBAL or similar software from the "Firmware & Engineering Models" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert VFD, DMG, OVA, IMA, VBOX, ADF, PVS, VHD, OVF, ISO, DSK or IMG files to MBI, try MBAL or another comparable tool in the "Firmware & Engineering Models" category.
The MBI Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MBI converter.
