About MBI files
The .MBI file extension is primarily used for set-top box firmware components (such as Mediasat or M-vision STB) and Mitsubishi firmware files. Another major use case is the MBAL material balance reservoir model created by Petroleum Experts. Additionally, older Mobipocket e-books store embedded images as .MBI files, and MagicISO uses the extension for Multi-Bootable Information Files. These formats present significant disadvantages for average users. They are highly specialized, proprietary, and closed-source. MBAL project files are locked into an expensive petroleum engineering suite, while firmware files are compiled binary blobs designed exclusively for specific hardware chips. You cannot natively open them in a web browser, and sharing them requires the recipient to have the exact same hardware or enterprise software license. Because of this, conversion targets depend entirely on the file's origin. If your .MBI is an MBAL file, the best target formats are CSV or XLSX for raw data, or PDF for reports, which requires exporting directly from the software. If it is a Mobipocket image, you can convert it to standard PNG, JPG, or WEBP. Firmware files, conversely, are unconvertible instructions. This file format is difficult to open or convert because standard online converters lack the proprietary decoders for niche petroleum databases or hardware firmwares. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible using convert.guru. We inspect the raw file headers, and if our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format like an image, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your MBI file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert MBI file to ISO, IMG, DMG, VHD, VMDK, VDI, HDD, QCOW, QCOW2, RAW, VBOX or OVA, you can use Petroleum Experts MBAL or similar software from the "Firmware or Reservoir Model" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert VFD, DMG, OVA, IMA, VBOX, ADF, PVS, VHD, OVF, ISO, DSK or IMG files to MBI, try Petroleum Experts MBAL or another comparable tool in the "Firmware or Reservoir Model" category.
The MBI Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MBI converter.
