A .BDT file most commonly serves as a Game Data Archive for titles developed by FromSoftware (such as Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Elden Ring). It acts as a massive container for encrypted 3D models, textures, audio files, and game scripts. In entirely different professional contexts, .BDT stands for Behandlungsdatenträger, a standardized text format for exchanging patient medical records in Germany. It is also used as a backup or reinforcement steel schedule file in Nemetschek Allplan CAD software.
The main disadvantage of game .BDT archives is their proprietary nature and massive file size, often exceeding several gigabytes. Standard archiving tools cannot open them because they are uniquely compressed and lack internal file path mapping. They rely entirely on a separate .BHD (header) file to index the contents; without this header, the .BDT data is completely useless. Medical .BDT files face different limitations: they are highly localized to German healthcare systems and require specific practice management software to read natively.
You cannot convert a game .BDT directly into a standard media file. Instead, you must extract it. For game modding, extract .BDT contents into raw formats like XML (for parameters) or DDS (for textures) using specialized unpackers.
