About MAAS files

A .MAAS file is typically a user's personal document, image, or archive that has been maliciously encrypted by the Maas variant of the STOP/Djvu ransomware family. In rare cases, it can also refer to a Media Attachment Application Stream file associated with Motorola devices, but the vast majority of users encounter this extension after a malware attack. When infected, the ransomware locks the original files and appends the .maas extension to the filenames (e.g., photo.jpg.maas). Victims usually attempt to convert these files back to their original states, such as JPG, PDF, ZIP, or DOCX.

However, doing so is highly problematic. Standard online converters cannot fix a .MAAS file because it is not a standard format; it is a locked data container secured with military-grade encryption. You cannot simply rename the extension or push it through a format converter to regain access. This makes the file completely useless and impossible to open with standard software like Adobe Acrobat or WinRAR. The only true way to restore the file is to decrypt it using specialized tools like the Emsisoft Decryptor for STOP Djvu.

Because this is a closed, proprietary encryption format generated by malware, standard online converters fail to process it. Often, only the original decryption key can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format - or if the file was only partially encrypted - viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your MAAS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted 4, CTS and PER files.

The MAAS Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP.
