A .maas file is not a standard document or media format; it is a file that has been encrypted and taken hostage by the STOP/Djvu ransomware. This specific variant appends the .maas extension to your original filenames (e.g., family_photo.jpg becomes family_photo.jpg.maas), effectively locking you out of your data. The underlying content - whether it is a JPG image, DOCX document, or MP4 video - remains intact but is scrambled using strong encryption algorithms (often AES or RSA).
Users encounter this file type exclusively during a malware infection. The primary problem is critical: you cannot open, edit, or convert these files using standard software like Microsoft Word or Adobe Photoshop. The file structure is fundamentally altered to prevent access without a specific decryption key. While the immediate instinct is to look for a "converter" to restore the file to PDF or JPEG, standard conversion tools will fail because they cannot interpret the encrypted data stream. The only viable "conversion" workflow is decryption. If the malware used an "offline key," tools from security vendors like Emsisoft may be able to recover your files. If an "online key" was used, decryption is mathematically impossible without the attacker's key, and restoring from an external backup is the only solution.
