About BLB files
A .blb file is a multi-purpose container format most commonly serving as a binary configuration database for AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition (formerly Catalyst). In this context, files like gmdb.blb store game profiles and media settings. However, the extension is also widely used by ComponentAce Absolute Database, a Delphi component that compiles a complete relational database into a single disk file to replace the legacy Borland Database Engine (BDE). Less frequently, it appears as a proprietary resource archive in video games like Final Fantasy XI or Dreamworks titles.
The main limitation for users is the proprietary nature of the format. .blb files are not human-readable text. If you are dealing with an Absolute Database file, you cannot open it in standard SQL clients or Microsoft Excel without specific ODBC drivers, creating a "vendor lock-in" scenario where data is inaccessible. For AMD users, these files often become bloated "ghost" files that occupy disk space without a clear purpose. Game modders face similar challenges, as the archives are compressed binary blobs that require specific hash keys to extract assets.
Best Conversion Targets:
- For Data Migration: If the file is an Absolute Database, the ideal workflow is converting table data to CSV for analysis or SQL script files for import into modern systems like PostgreSQL or SQLite.
- For Archiving/Debugging: Convert binary content to Hex or Plain Text to inspect headers and identify the specific file version.
- For Game Assets: The goal is usually extracting internal resources to standard formats like PNG (textures) or WAV (audio), though this usually requires format-specific unpackers rather than generic conversion.
Convert.Guru analyzes your BLB file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted BLOB, BIB, BDT, BMF and BAM files.
The BLB Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BLB converter.
